Heathfield & District Bonfire Society (HDBS) celebrates tradition, community, and the spirit of Heathfield.
We were reformed in 2018 by a group of local bonfire enthusiasts who wanted to bring the community together and revive the traditional celebration of bonfire and torchlit processions in Heathfield.
Today, HDBS is proud to be part of the annual bonfire season across Sussex, helping to preserve the county’s unique and much-loved bonfire traditions – bringing our community together.
We are a friendly, family-focused organisation with a membership nearing 200 people, representing all ages and backgrounds — from under ones to those north of 70!
Our involvement in the community goes well beyond our annual bonfire.
Throughout the year, we actively support local organisations, events, schools and community groups, helping wherever we can to make local activities happen.
Our members regularly provide marshals and practical support for events including Le Marche, Heathfield Show and the Waldron Car Show and more.
We also provide infrastructure, equipment and practical assistance to local schools and community groups, helping them to organise and deliver their own events and activities.
HDBS is a Community Interest Company (CIC) and a not-for-profit organisation. Any surplus generated through our activities is put back into the local community, supporting charities, groups and good causes.
Heathfield’s annual torchlit procession takes place every October, and we lead Heathfield’s largest torchlit procession, bringing colour, tradition and spectacle to the streets of the town.
The procession culminates in a spectacular bonfire and professional firework display, providing an unforgettable evening for the whole community.
Get involved!
New members are always welcome, and membership offers fantastic value for money.
Whether you want to take part in our events, help behind the scenes or simply become part of a friendly local organisation, there’s a place for you at HDBS.
Visit our website or social media pages to find out more and get involved.

Heathfield and Waldron First Responders support the ambulance service, but this activity of the First Responders has been temporarily suspended pending further recruitment and training, by SECAmb (the South East Coast Ambulance service). For more information contact Dr Tim Williams on 01435 812273 or email: twill30999@aol.com.

You can check the location of the nearest public access defibrillator on a map if you type in your post code or town at http://www.defibfinder.uk. In the event of a cardiac arrest, give CPR and get someone else to dial 999 with your location: the operator will tell them where the nearest defibrillator is and arrange an emergency ambulance, as well as giving clear CPR instructions which are also available at http://www.bhf.org.uk/how-you-can-help/how-to-save-a-life/how-to-do-cpr

Waldron Cricket Club – The Club has a history of managing to play its cricket matches uninterrupted by weather, largely due to the outstanding drainage of the ground on sandstone and on a windswept slope. Combining that with the discovery of the origins of the cricket club being identified first of all by the centenary match being snowed off, the club motto is “Nives Ludum Impedire Solum Possunt” (“Only snow can stop play!” in Latin)
Waldron Cricket Club is the third oldest cricket club in known history – at least according to the “Cricketer Magazine”. Origins of the game of cricket are believed to have stemmed from a game played by shepherds on the Sussex Downs. The ball was a stone or piece of flint wrapped in wool and dyed with the shepherd’s usual marker of red. The wicket was a part of a wicket turnstile or fence and the bat was a shepherd’s staff.
The game evolved into a betting vehicle for aristocrats/landowners who challenged similarly titled gentlemen or manor owners into games, with substantial gambles over the outcome. The landowners did the betting and the batting, and the farmworkers did the bowling and the majority of the “fetching” (i.e fielding).
Waldron plays at a historic picturesque ground with a local pub, The Star, in walking distance.
The club participates in the Sussex Slam competition, the National Village Knockout & Oakshott Cup and plays cricket midweek, Saturdays and Sundays. There is a pub side, the RATS, who play 20/20 cricket during the week. Outdoor nets typically take place on a Thursday evening on an artificial net with a bowling machine.
