Urgent Gas Network Upgrade – A267 Tunbridge Wells Road, Argos Hill

On Tuesday 13 January, third-party damage caused water to enter 1400m of the gas network on Tunbridge Wells Road at Argos Hill. This resulted in a loss of supply to approximately 70 properties.
To restore supplies for customers as quickly as possible, our engineers extracted the water and reintroduced gas to the affected metal gas main. To ensure long term safety and reliability this section of gas main and adjoining service pipes to properties must now be urgently replaced with new plastic pipe.

Our contractors, I&G Contracting have begun work in phases to carry out this urgent upgrade. All our work is between the junctions of B2101 Bicycle Arms Road and Yew Tree Lane.
Phase one – Traffic lights (now in progress) Working from outside Gable Oast to outside Jessop, open cutting a trench to install a larger gas pipe needed to maintain safe gas pressures for the area. During this time, we’ll also be working within adjoining properties to prepare service pipes for upgrade.

Phase two – Road closure From Monday 16 February for about approximately eight weeks, we’ll be replacing the gas main from outside Jessop to the junction with Yew Tree Lane. We’ll be inserting the new plastic pipe inside the old pipework, using it as a carrier. Due to the number of excavations required a road closure is the only safe option, and this will be in place for the full eight-week duration.
Phase three – Traffic lights – We’ll be replacing the pipe from outside Gable Oast to the B2101 junction.

Phase four – Traffic lights (A267) and road closure (B2101) The final phase of our work is the most complex. We’ll be working at the A267 – B2101 junction to replace our pipe and carry out controlled connections to our network infrastructure. During this phase, the A267 will be managed under temporary traffic lights. We’ll also need to close the B2101 Bicycle Arms Road at its junction with the A267, and we are currently working with East Sussex Council to agree on the most suitable timing for this closure.

•Signed diversion routes will be in place for affected motorists while roads are closed. Vehicle access will be maintained for residents living within the works area
•Vehicle access within the closure site will change as works progress. Our engineers and local signage will keep road users and residents informed.
•Bus routes will be impacted – we advise passengers to contact the relevant bus operators for updates on changes to services.
•Refuse Collections – We’ll work with the local council to ensure collections can continue to be made with as little disruption as possible

Our onsite engineers are happy to help with any questions, and we’ll be providing regular updates on our website here https://www.sgn.co.uk/our-gas-works/major-planned-projects/mayfield-a267-argos-hill

We know roadworks can be disruptive and we’re sorry for any inconvenience. Once complete, the new plastic pipe—designed to last around 80 years—will ensure Argos Hill has a safe and reliable gas supply long into the future.
